What is SA 8000? How many essential areas cover under SA 8000?

SA stands for social accountability. So as name suggests it is a social accountability certification standard developed in 1997 by Social accountability international. SA 8000 true implementation in any organization means organization is complying or exercising basic human rights and socially accepted practices within the organization.  It is similarly ISO type modeled standard. SA 8000 embraces existing different internationally recognized standard like UN convention on the rights of the child.


It is a type of certification standard to show trust in customer about the organizations duty of care towards their employee.


Organisations if wants to achieve SA 8000 then SA 8000 measures organisations performance against 09 essential areas and which are as mention below:


Health and Safety: Reasonable requirements should be met like Rest facility, right equipment, drinking water etc.

Working hours: 48 hours a week working with one off day every week. Maximum 12 hours overtime in a week and payment against allowed overtime done.

Disciplinary Practice: No abuse to worker, no mental trauma, no threat etc. Disciplinary practice for these.

Compensation: Legally accepted minimum wages payment.

Management: Planning, actions and review of the compliance of SA 8000. Record keeping.

Discrimination: No discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, origin, gender, disability etc.

Freedom of association: Collective bargaining is allowed after formation of trade union.

Child Labor: Prohibits child labor (Usually under the age of 15). Funds for children who lose the jobs due to this requirement.


Forced Labor: No means of forced labor like original document keeping, passport keeping, one month or few days’ salary keeping by organsiation during the course of employee duties.
