What is Health and Safety Policy?

Health and Safety Policy development is first phase of any health and safety management system. i.e. OHSAS 18001, HSG 65 etc. Health and Safety Policy formulation is Plan part of Plan, Do, Check and Act approach (PDCA). After formulation of the Health and Safety policy organisation has to form action plan to do the tasks. This action plan will fulfill the objective of the policy.




Doing with Health and Safety is a legal requirement .i.e. Health and Safety at work act 1974. Also this is an important aspect of demonstrating management commitment towards health and safety.  While formulation of Health and Safety Policy organisation consider where they want to be and which direction we should go. 



Health and safety policy helps in achieving many objectives like as mention below:

1-      It helps in showing Management commitment towards health and Safety.
2-      It helps to achieve continuous improvement in health and safety leading indicators and decrease in lagging indicators.
3-      It helps to comply with local regulations and global legislation.
4-      It provides concise framework to do the business in safe manner.
5-      Setting health and safety objectives with other business objectives like Finance, Production etc.
6-      It helps to remember every time ultimate objective of Health and Safety Policy.


Policy Validity

Policy should constitute below mentioned specific aspects or it should contain below aspects:
1-      It should be signed by Top management personnel who has control over ultimate all affairs of the organisation. i.e Generally by Occupier.
2-      It should be updated annually or when changes happened.
3-      Explains responsibility of each and every individual.
4-      Explains method of communication.
5-      Explains resource allocation method.
6-      Commitment for review and update after change.
